Duration
6 Day/5 Night

This itinerary is specially designed for travelers visiting during the period when the Great Migration is moving through the Northern Serengeti and Mara River region.
Rather than spending only one day searching for the migration, you will stay three nights in Northern Serengeti, giving you multiple game drives and several opportunities to explore the Mara River area in search of large wildebeest and zebra herds and, with the right timing and some luck, witness one of the famous river crossings.
From Northern Serengeti, your journey continues south through the park to Central Serengeti, where you spend another night exploring one of the Serengeti's most wildlife-rich regions.
You then continue to the Ngorongoro Highlands for your final safari night before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater on Day 6.
After your crater game drive, continue by road to Arusha Airport for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar.
Safari Highlights
This 6-day fly-in safari combines the seasonal Great Migration experience in Northern Serengeti, Central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Fly Directly from Zanzibar to Northern Serengeti
Start close to the migration area rather than spending valuable safari time driving across northern Tanzania to reach the Serengeti.
Three Nights in Northern Serengeti
Spend three nights near the Mara River region, giving you considerably more time to search for migrating herds and possible river-crossing activity.
Great Migration & Mara River Experience
Explore the Northern Serengeti during the seasonal presence of large wildebeest and zebra herds, with opportunities to visit established viewing areas along the Mara River.
Detailed 6-Day Safari Itinerary
- Hotel pick and drop off is included in the price
- Private safari with handpicked safari lodges/Camp
- Serengeti 4 nights & 1 Night Ngorongoro Highland

Day 1: Zanzibar → Fly to Northern Serengeti → Afternoon Game Drive
Depending on your package arrangements, you will be collected from your Zanzibar hotel and transferred to the airport in time for your scheduled domestic safari flight.
After checking in, board your flight from Zanzibar toward Northern Serengeti.
Safari flights normally operate using smaller aircraft and may include intermediate stops depending on the airline's routing and passenger movements for that day.
As you approach the Serengeti, Zanzibar's coastline gives way to the vast landscapes of northern Tanzania.
Your professional safari guide will be waiting to welcome you.
After a short safari briefing and loading your luggage into the vehicle, your Great Migration experience begins.
Depending on wildlife movements, your guide may begin searching for migrating wildebeest and zebra herds or explore areas where resident wildlife is active.

Day 2: Full-Day Northern Serengeti & Mara River Safari
Wake up in one of the most remote and spectacular regions of Serengeti National Park.
After an early breakfast, depart with your safari guide for a full day exploring Northern Serengeti and the Mara River area.
Today is dedicated to the Great Migration.
Your guide will use local knowledge and available information about recent herd movements to decide where to concentrate your game drive.
Some days may involve finding large herds grazing across open country.
Other days may involve positioning the vehicle around the Mara River and waiting to see whether animals begin gathering near a crossing point.
If there are signs that a crossing may occur, your guide may recommend spending more time in the area.
Patience can be important. Rather than rushing from one wildlife sighting to another, today allows enough flexibility to follow migration activity when conditions are promising. If a crossing is not developing, there is still plenty to explore across Northern Serengeti.
The region supports excellent resident wildlife in addition to the migration.
Predators often follow areas with concentrations of prey, while elephants, giraffes, buffalo and other animals inhabit the northern landscapes throughout the season.

Day 3: Full-Day Great Migration Safari in Northern Serengeti
Your third day is another full day dedicated to Northern Serengeti and the Great Migration.
This additional day is one of the most important advantages of the six-day itinerary.
A traveler staying only one night in Northern Serengeti may have very limited time to search for migration activity.
With three nights, you have several game-drive periods available and much greater flexibility.
After breakfast, return to areas where migration activity appears strongest.
If large groups of wildebeest have gathered near the river, your guide may concentrate today's safari around the established crossing areas.
You may see herds approaching the river, animals gathering on the surrounding plains or groups that have recently moved between different grazing areas.
Your guide can adapt the day's route according to wildlife activity and your interests.
Photography enthusiasts can also benefit from having multiple days in the north, as changing light, weather and animal movements create different opportunities each day.
After another full day in the wilderness, return to your camp for your final evening in Northern Serengeti.

Day 4: Northern Serengeti → Central Serengeti Game Drive
After breakfast, leave Northern Serengeti and begin your journey south toward Central Serengeti.
Today is not simply a transfer day.
You remain inside one of Africa's great wildlife areas, so the journey becomes an extended game drive through changing Serengeti landscapes.
As you travel south, you begin to see how enormous and varied the Serengeti really is.
The landscapes gradually change as you leave the northern river systems and travel toward the heart of the park.
Your guide will continue looking for wildlife along the way, stopping whenever interesting sightings develop.
Depending on the route and wildlife movements, possible encounters include elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, hyenas and different species of antelope.
Later in the day you reach Central Serengeti, often associated with the Seronera area.
Central Serengeti is one of the best-known parts of the national park and is particularly valued for its resident wildlife.
River valleys, grasslands, woodland and rocky kopjes create different habitats within a relatively accessible area.
This diversity supports both prey species and predators.

Day 5: Central Serengeti Game Drive → Ngorongoro Highlands
The morning gives you another opportunity to explore the Seronera region and surrounding wildlife areas.
Central Serengeti can provide a particularly good contrast to your previous days in the north.
Instead of concentrating mainly on the migration, today's safari focuses more broadly on resident wildlife and the ecological diversity of the central region.
Your guide will explore areas where recent wildlife activity has been promising.
Rocky kopjes are particularly interesting features of the Serengeti landscape. They provide elevated viewpoints and habitat for different animals, including predators.
Riverine areas and valleys also support a variety of wildlife.
Following your game drive, continue toward the southeastern side of Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Your surroundings gradually change as you leave the Serengeti plains and travel toward the higher country around Ngorongoro.
The drive itself forms part of the safari experience, with expansive landscapes and possible wildlife encounters along the route.
Later in the afternoon, arrive at your lodge in or around the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Safari → Arusha Airport → Zanzibar
Your final day begins early.
After breakfast, depart your accommodation and travel toward the entrance to Ngorongoro Crater.
Today you experience an entirely different safari environment from the Serengeti.
Drive down the crater road toward the floor of the caldera for your morning game drive.
Ngorongoro Crater contains grasslands, wetlands, woodland and water sources within its dramatic volcanic walls.
Its relatively concentrated wildlife population makes the crater one of the most distinctive game-viewing areas on Tanzania's northern safari circuit.
Because you need to reach Arusha Airport later today, your crater safari is normally concentrated in the morning.
Your guide will make the most of the available time while keeping your confirmed flight departure and required airport check-in time in mind.
A picnic lunch may be arranged according to your final schedule.
After completing the game drive, ascend from the crater and begin the road journey toward Arusha.

Safari Flights & Airstrips
Northern Serengeti is served by safari airstrips, with the final arrival airstrip selected according to your camp location, operating airline and flight schedule.
Safari flights typically use smaller aircraft than international flights.
Your flight may also make intermediate stops to pick up or drop off passengers at other airstrips.
This is a normal part of safari aviation in Tanzania.

Safari Luggage
Safari aircraft usually have stricter baggage requirements than international airlines.
Baggage restrictions vary according to the operating airline and aircraft.
Travelers should therefore follow the baggage allowance stated on their confirmed safari flight rather than relying on a general allowance found online.
Soft-sided travel bags are generally more practical for small safari aircraft.
Travelers returning to the same Zanzibar hotel may also ask their hotel whether larger luggage can be stored while they take only their safari essentials to the mainland.
Optional Hot-Air Balloon Safari
A hot-air balloon experience can be added to the itinerary where available.
This is an optional activity and should be arranged in advance because availability can be limited during popular migration periods.
A balloon safari normally requires a very early start and will affect the timing of the normal morning game drive, so it should be incorporated into the itinerary when booking rather than added at the last minute.
Is a Mara River Crossing Guaranteed?
No.
This should be made completely clear before booking.
The migration is a natural process involving wild animals moving according to environmental conditions.
Neither a safari operator, guide, lodge nor national park can determine exactly when wildebeest will cross the Mara River.
Three nights in Northern Serengeti are designed to increase the amount of time available to search for migration activity, not to guarantee a crossing.
Even without witnessing an actual river crossing, seeing enormous migration herds spread across Northern Serengeti can itself be an exceptional wildlife experience.
