Detailed 5-Day Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Zanzibar → Fly to Northern Serengeti → Afternoon Game Drive
Your safari adventure begins in Zanzibar.
Depending on your package arrangements, you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the airport in time for your scheduled safari flight.
After check-in, board a domestic safari aircraft for your journey from Zanzibar toward Northern Serengeti.
Safari flights normally use smaller aircraft and may make scheduled stops along the route depending on the operating airline and day's flight schedule.
As you approach Northern Serengeti, the landscapes below change dramatically from the Indian Ocean coastline to the vast wilderness of northern Tanzania.
Arrival in Northern Serengeti
Depending on your accommodation and flight operation, you may arrive at an airstrip such as Kogatende, which serves Northern Serengeti.
Your professional safari guide will be waiting at the agreed airstrip.
After introductions and a short safari briefing, your first Northern Serengeti game drive begins.
There is no need to wait until the following morning to start exploring. Depending on your arrival time, your transfer from the airstrip toward your safari camp can become your first wildlife-viewing experience.

Day 2: Full-Day Northern Serengeti & Mara River Safari
Wake up in Northern Serengeti for one of the most exciting days of your safari.
After breakfast, depart with your guide for a full-day game drive focused on the Northern Serengeti and Mara River region.
Today is flexible.
Rather than following a rigid route, your guide will assess wildlife activity and the location of the migratory herds before deciding where to concentrate your game drive.
Exploring the Mara River Area
The Mara River is one of the best-known features of the Great Migration.
During the appropriate migration period, large herds of wildebeest and zebra may gather in the surrounding plains as they move through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
At times, thousands of animals may congregate near sections of the river.
But an important thing to understand is that river crossings do not happen according to a timetable.
The animals decide when and where to cross.
You might arrive and find large herds waiting along the riverbank, while at another moment they may suddenly begin crossing.
Waiting for a River Crossing
When migration conditions are favorable, your guide may position the safari vehicle at an authorized viewing area and wait for the herds to move.
Patience is often an important part of a Mara River safari.
A herd may approach the river and then move away again before eventually crossing at another point or time.
Your guide will therefore balance time spent around potential crossing areas with game drives elsewhere in Northern Serengeti.
Day 3: Full-Day Great Migration Safari in Northern Serengeti
Today gives you another complete day in Northern Serengeti.
This additional day is one of the biggest advantages of this five-day itinerary.
Attempting to experience the Mara River migration with only one day in Northern Serengeti puts considerable pressure on something that is entirely controlled by nature.
Having multiple days gives your guide more opportunity to follow the movements of the herds and respond to changing wildlife activity.
Searching for the Migration
After breakfast, set out for another extended game drive.
Your guide may return toward the Mara River if conditions appear promising or explore other sections of Northern Serengeti where the herds are concentrated.
The Great Migration is constantly moving.
Wildebeest may spread across large areas in search of grazing and water, and their movements can change even within the same week.
Your safari therefore isn't simply about driving to one fixed "migration spot."
It is about exploring the ecosystem and responding to what nature is doing during your visit.
Another Opportunity for Mara River Crossings
If large herds are gathering near the river, you may spend part of the day observing their movements.
When a crossing develops naturally, you may have the opportunity to watch one of the Serengeti's most famous wildlife events.
However, we never guarantee a river crossing.
It is possible to spend several days in the area without seeing a crossing, while another visitor may encounter one shortly after arriving.
What we can do is place you in the right general region during the appropriate season and give you sufficient time to maximize your chances.
Day 4: Northern Serengeti → Central Serengeti Game Drive
After breakfast, check out from your Northern Serengeti camp.
Today you leave the migration area and travel south through Serengeti National Park toward Central Serengeti.
But this isn't simply a transfer day.
Your journey becomes a full safari experience as you explore different habitats and wildlife areas along the way.
From Northern to Central Serengeti
The drive gives you an opportunity to appreciate just how large and diverse the Serengeti is.
Northern Serengeti has a different character from the central region, with river systems, rolling landscapes and woodland areas.
As you travel south, the scenery gradually changes.
Your guide will stop for wildlife sightings along the route rather than rushing directly to your accommodation.
Central Serengeti
Eventually, you enter the Central Serengeti region.
Central Serengeti is an important wildlife area throughout the year and offers a different safari experience from the migration-focused north.
The region's combination of open plains, waterways and rocky kopjes creates habitat for a wide range of species.
Predator sightings are one of the attractions of the central region, although, as always, no specific animal can be guaranteed.
Enjoy a picnic lunch during your safari or lunch according to your accommodation arrangements.
Continue your afternoon game drive before heading to your lodge or tented camp.
This location also puts you in a better position for your early departure toward Ngorongoro the following morning.
Enjoy dinner and your final night in Serengeti.

Day 5: Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha Airport → Zanzibar
Your final safari day starts early.
After breakfast, leave Central Serengeti and travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The journey takes you out of Serengeti National Park and toward the spectacular Ngorongoro highlands.
Ngorongoro Crater
On arrival at the crater rim, descend toward the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater for your final game drive.
Ngorongoro provides a dramatic contrast to the enormous landscapes you have experienced in Serengeti.
The crater is a large volcanic caldera with grasslands, wetlands and forest habitats supporting a high concentration of wildlife.
Ngorongoro → Arusha Airport
After your crater experience, ascend the crater wall and begin the journey toward Arusha.
You travel through the Ngorongoro highlands and onward through northern Tanzania.
Your guide will transfer you directly to Arusha Airport in time for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar.
Because the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is approximately 174 km by road from Arusha Airport, the day's crater activity and departure time must be carefully coordinated with the confirmed flight schedule.

Why Spend Three Nights in Northern Serengeti?
If your primary objective is witnessing the Great Migration around the Mara River, time matters.
A Mara River crossing is not a scheduled tourist activity.
Nobody can say that the wildebeest will cross at 10:00 in the morning or at a particular crossing point on a particular day.
The herds may approach the river, wait, turn away or move to a completely different area.
By spending three nights in Northern Serengeti, you have your arrival-day game drive plus two full safari days to explore the region.
That is considerably more appropriate for a migration-focused itinerary than flying into Northern Serengeti for only one night.
Can You Guarantee a Wildebeest River Crossing?
No responsible safari operator should guarantee one.
This is one of the most important things to explain before a client books.
A river crossing is a completely natural event.
The wildebeest decide:
-
When to approach the river
-
Which crossing point to use
-
Whether to cross
-
When to turn back
-
How long to remain in an area
We therefore don't sell this itinerary by promising "you will see a Mara River crossing."
Instead, we design the safari to put you in Northern Serengeti during the appropriate migration period, stay for multiple nights and give your guide enough time to search the area.
That significantly improves the quality of the safari without making promises about wildlife behavior.
When Is This Safari Recommended?
This is a seasonal Northern Serengeti itinerary.
The broad northern migration period is usually associated with the drier months when large herds move through Northern Serengeti and the wider Mara ecosystem.
However, annual rainfall affects the timing and movement of the animals.
The herds don't follow a human calendar.
For this reason, your exact Northern Serengeti accommodation and safari arrangements should be selected according to your travel dates and current seasonal expectations.
If your dates fall outside the period when the herds are normally concentrated in Northern Serengeti, we may recommend a different Serengeti region instead of selling you this exact itinerary.
Safari Flight from Zanzibar to Northern Serengeti
Safari flights use smaller aircraft designed to connect Tanzania's airports with remote safari airstrips.
Depending on your date and airline, your flight may make intermediate stops before reaching Northern Serengeti.
Northern Serengeti is served by airstrips including Kogatende and Lamai, while Seronera Airstrip serves Central Serengeti.
The exact airport, airstrip, departure time and routing will be confirmed according to the flight schedule available for your safari dates.
Optional Activities
Depending on availability and your itinerary, additional activities may be arranged.
Serengeti Balloon Safari
A hot-air balloon safari can provide a completely different perspective of the Serengeti, followed by arrangements according to the balloon operator's program.
This is an optional activity and should be booked in advance, particularly during the busy migration period.
