Have you ever dreamed of flying over wild animals in Africa as the sun rises? A balloon safari in Serengeti National Park is one of the most exciting and peaceful ways to enjoy nature and wildlife in Tanzania. You’ll float high above the ground in a hot air balloon and see the beauty of the Serengeti like never before.
What Is a Balloon Safari?
A balloon safari is a ride in a large hot air balloon. It takes off early in the morning, just before sunrise. You’ll rise gently into the sky and enjoy amazing views of the animals and landscapes below. It’s a calm and quiet experience, and you can take great photos as the light changes during the early morning hours.

What Can You See from the Balloon?
From the balloon, you can see:
Large groups of animals like wildebeest, zebras, and elephants
Predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunting on the plains
Rivers, trees, and open grasslands that stretch as far as the eye can see
The famous Great Migration, depending on the time of year
What Happens During a Balloon Safari?
Early Morning Pick-Up from Your Lodge or Camp
Your balloon safari adventure begins very early in the morning, usually around 4:30 AM to 5:00 AM, depending on your location. A friendly driver from the balloon company or your tour organizer will pick you up from your lodge or camp in Serengeti.
- The early start is important because balloons need to fly when the air is cool and the wind is calm.
You may drive in the dark for a short time, so dress warmly and bring a jacket.
Arrive at the Launch Site Before Sunrise
Once you arrive at the balloon launch site, you’ll meet your pilot and ground crew. The crew will explain the safety rules and what to expect during the flight.
- The launch site is usually a quiet open area in the park, surrounded by nature.
You will see other guests gathering and the balloons lying flat on the ground.
Watch the Balloon Being Filled with Hot Air
Now comes the exciting part – inflating the balloon. Big fans are used first to blow cold air into the balloon. Then, burners are turned on to heat the air.
- You’ll watch as the balloon slowly rises and takes shape.
- This is a great time to take photos and videos as the sky starts to brighten with the coming sunrise.

Climb Into the Basket and Take Off Gently into the Sky
Once the balloon is ready, your pilot will ask you to climb into the balloon basket. It’s divided into sections to keep everyone safe and comfortable.
- You’ll get into a seated position for take-off, as instructed.
Then, the balloon lifts off gently, and within moments, you’ll be floating high above the Serengeti plains.
Float for About 1 Hour Over the Serengeti
Now you are in the air! The flight lasts about 60 minutes, depending on wind and weather.
- You’ll see wild animals like lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more.
- You may also spot rivers, trees, and maybe even catch the Great Migration if your safari is during the right season.
The balloon is quiet except for the sound of the burner. It’s calm and peaceful – a perfect time for photos and enjoying the view.
Land Safely and Enjoy a Special Breakfast in the Bush
After about an hour, the pilot will start the landing process. The balloon slowly descends, and you may feel a small bump as the basket touches the ground.
- The ground crew will be waiting at the landing site.
- After landing, you’ll be taken to a beautiful spot in the bush where tables and chairs are set up under a tree or in an open area.
You’ll enjoy a freshly prepared bush breakfast, which may include eggs, fruits, fresh juice, bread, coffee, and even a glass of champagne – a traditional balloon safari celebration!

Receive a Balloon Certificate to Remember Your Experience
Before heading back, you’ll receive a balloon flight certificate with your name on it. This is a nice souvenir to remember this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
After breakfast and certificates, you’ll be taken back to your lodge or joined with your guide for the rest of your safari activities.
- Things to Remember
Wear warm clothes and closed shoes (it’s cold early in the morning).
Bring your camera or phone – the views are amazing!
Balloon rides are safe and run by trained, experienced pilots.
